  1. What's the best card for PC - Windows XP? I'm looking to capture from a mini dv camera straight to computer via firewire with Adobe Premiere or something like that. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  2. A firewire card does not capture, it simply transfers DV video, so to be honest a firwire card is a firewire card, paying lots more money wont get any better quality. You can buy them for about £20

  3. well, yeah, i know, but you can just transfer video straight from mini dv camera to firewire card to video on computer right? good to know that it doesn't really matter brand-wise

Adding a firewire card is like adding a card to add ethernet or usb ports. If it's not cheap you were ripped off . The companies that sell $100 firewire cards are selling you the software. I paid $20 for mine and it works just fine (it was to replace the $15 one I bought 2 years ago... when it started acting funny I decided it was cheaper to buy a new one than troubleshoot). Even the $20 one came with software to capture the DV (it's free anyway if you use DVIO and such)

  5. I recommend Studio DV 8. It includes Studio DV8 software and a firewire card. About $80-90 and $30 rebate available. Studio DV is a very good video editing program.

  7. I didn't see you got Premiere. In that case, you better get the cheapest one as BJ said.

  8. If you want the card bundled with a great software: $79

Pinnacle Studio 8 DV Professional Movie Making System

    Just the card for $29

WindowsXP's Free MovieMaker is good enough for most people.

    fateman,
yeah, as bj_m said, the (ads pyro) is as good a card as any, and with
some software (doesn't work on my win98 though, needs 98SE, as most
software do these days, so be aware of this issue when you're looking
    for, DV endeavors)
    * Got my ads pyro card (among 3 other cards/software packs) for $39 at
    CC.
    * Got SIIG card for $49
    * and 2 other cards for $20 something.

I use either DVIO or mostly I use my favorite "RSDVCAP.EXE"...
Mind you, i don't really use them anymore, but when I do use them, I
use the "RSDVCAP.EXE" app. Has Type 1 and Type 2 avi file types.
Also, make sure that you select for Type 2, cause this will be the most
universal (or accepted into any app) w/out issues, where Type 1 will not
or give you hickups due to Audio interleaving. In short, Just use Type 2.
    That's it!!
