So far I have backed up over 30 DVD's and every one of them is in anamorphic 16:9. I leave the aspect ratio setting at 16:9, however I have been pondering if it might be better to change the setting in DVD2SVCD to 4:3 (assuming 16:9 anamorphic source) since my TV can vertically squeeze the material (my tv is 4:3) to make up for the strectched encoded material. This way (only guessing) wouldn't more of the encoded material be on the actual picture and not as much is wasted on the black borders? Unless, of course, the encoded material never envolves the black borders.

I am relatively new at this. If you can't tell.

    Thanks

After backing up 30 DVDs I wouldn't really call you a newbie but there is always something that everyone doesn't know about.

Definitely leave it at 16:9, it's future proof in case you ever get a Widescreen TV and there is no noticeable difference on a 4:3 TV.
As for wasted bitrates on the border there are no borders (or very little for a 2.35:1 ratio movie) in a 16:9 Video Stream.

What you should do is clip the source in your encoder before encoding so the black bars won't be re-encoded, especially good for older DVDs that were encoded in letterboxed 4:3 because then your telling the encoder to only encode the actual movie. Then encode the new video stream at 16:9 and your DVD Player will resize the video and add the borders around the movie so your valuable bitrate is just used on the movie and when/if you get a widescreen TV it will go full screen on that straight away.

  3. Hi roach1976,

How do you do that in DVD2SVCD?

    Thanks.

I guess I just spent some time in the "advanced section" in this forum and in Doom9's. After all the Avisinyth script talk in there I guess I was a little intimidated. How do those guys understand all that stuff. I don't even know where to type the script if I knew any.

As for the encoding. I agree, I think I will keep doing what I am doing. Thanks for the suggestion of the clipping, however, I am all about simplicity and very little time spent on backing up DVD's is an important factor. I enjoy putting in the DVD and hitting go, then coming back 8 hours later and burning the images. It's so darn easy, that it has forced me to put off buying a DVD burner.

However, if I come across a letterboxed DVD I may try what you suggested.

The way I do it is through TMPGEnc, seeing as that is the encoder I use, I wouldn't know where to do it in CCE and if it has this option.
In TMPGEnc settings I go to 'Advanced' and then double click 'Clip Frame', in there you can adjust the the frame's borders till you're just left with the movie and no black borders. Leave the other options under 'Clip Frame' unticked and make sure the 'Mask Color Setting' is a nice jet black then you can edit the top, bottom, left and right borders till you're satisfied.

    Interesting,

Although, I am still a bit confused. Can you change those settings and still use DVD2SVCD? If you can, when do you adjust those settings? (before running DVD2SVCD, or is it possible to adjust "during" the DVD2SVCD process) I was under the impression that the only settings you can adjust are those that are located in DVD2SVCD.

Maybe you're right. I use different programs myself to get the end result. So maybe you can't change it in DVD2SVCD, I've never used it.
