When I tried to take a screen capture of an mpeg video, it came up black/blank. Will HyperSnap only take pics of .avi?
Also what's the best way to convert mpeg back to .avi?

If you disable hardware/video acceleration in your video player, you should be able to take screenshots of any video, even if you just use the Printscreen key.

What does hardware accel. actually do? Does it affect video quality or does it help prevent buffering problems?

It reduces CPU usage and can help improve the quality. For example, most video cards will filter the video to remove blockiness when the video is scaled past 100%.
You should disable acceleration when taking screenshots and enable it when you're finished.
