I've just been quoted on the following computer system and I was hoping to receive some feedback from some experts on this forum. I'd like to know if you guys think it is good price I've been quoted and is the machine right for what I intend to use it for.

I plan to capture my old analogue home video, edit and then burn to CD. I plan to buy the canapus ADVC100 and a DVD burner when I can afford them and add them to this machine in the future.

I've been quoted $2630AU, I think in US dollars it would be about half that.

  2. i dont know what the prices are for computer hardware in australia.. but for $1815 i could build a way sweeter system than they're offering.. probably even with a dvd burner..

i wouldnt consider it a deal in the united states, but maybe it is in australia.

    jeex:

Don't forget that he is requesting 6.1 speakers, 2 80 gig drives, GFTi4200. These are pricey items.

Also the system you build yourself will probably not have an official licenced OS or software? right? That would make the $200 difference right there.

I personally would find the best proces on this hardware they are quoting you. Add it up + 200(software) + 10%, if they are over then see if they can come down some, if they are under then it's probably not woth the hassle to DIY.

[edit: though it said LCD not CRT..... hmmm that makes a big difference, probably can do better on that deal]

  4. snowmoon,

i've actually got two 80gig seagates in my computer right now.. they cost me $80 each. and a gfti4200 will run you about $150.. so thats $310.. unless those are some really expensive 6.1's, i cant see that as being a good deal..

  5. In Australia, that's a pretty good deal... It is very reasonable indeed.

@ jeex: you can't necessarily compare the cost of things in the US to anywhere else. Those items you've mentioned are definitely much more expensive in Australia.

  6. Honestly I have seen cheaper. My advice is to look on the net and see if it is worth it. It doesn't have to be exactly the same, just look at the specs then upgrade it and see if the price matches up.

My advice would be before you purchase look at the new macs that are out. I'm not sure about the prices around your parts, but you can get a nice G4 here that is perfect for capturing and editing for around $1000 US. Check em' out and see if anything catches your eye.
