  1. How come DivX .avi files are so bad quality? I mean I downloaded over 4 60meg DivX movies, and they are all blurry...

But when I download a Mpeg file, although its bigger, the quality is amazing..

So how come DivX is so bad?

  2. It's difficult to compare these two. As with MPEGs you can specify a bitrate on both video and audio when making DivX films. The person that created the DivX film you've downloaded may have chosen to use a low bitrate so the DivX would fit on a CD or it would take less time to download. Loads of action scenes require a higher bitrate then scenes with little action and camera movement.
Another reason might be the sourcematerial. Maybe you compare (S)VCD's created from DVD's whereas the DivX you've downloaded comes from a rented VHS tape that has seen the interior of at least 100 VCR's.
My experience is that 650MByte DivX's and bigger usualy are of good quality and make a good source for creating VCD's.

  4. No, i was downloading some Simpson's movies and i found this 120 meg (22 mins) mpg file and it was very good quality, compared to the divx .avi's i found at 50 megs( 22 mins)

  5. DivX was SPECIFICALLY made for DVD rips. Although usually it looks good on TVRips, its purpose was for DVD. As for the filesize...20 mins for a 50mb TVrip means it is a LOW bitrate, hence worse quality. I have some TV eps that are about 20 mins, and are DivX encodes, but they are 100mb each. This is b/c they use a HIGHER bitrate, meaning better quality and larger filsize. For TVRips though, i recommend sticking with MPEG. Keep in mind... the larger the bitrate, the better it would look. Like those DivX encoded VCDs would look exactly the same if u used the same bitrate as the MPEG it came from (or close to it) but the reason they look so bad is b/c they drastically reduce the bitrate. hope that answers your question and others about similar quality issues.
