Trying to create sub titles

Hi guys, I'm very new to all of this and have been trying to add sub titles to a movie (2001 A space odyssey) using SubCreator but apparently I'm too dumb to figure it out. My goal is to add subtitles to the beginning part with all the monkeys then clip that part out and poke fun of the guys at work. Maybe it's not possible but I know I'm getting nowhere on my own.
