I tried that... downloaded the template (352x480) and encoded with TMPEGEnc, all went well.

But when I tried to burn, Nero complained about the format, cuz it was not standard 352x240, but I ignored it and burned anyway.

The film played but it cutted some top and bottom parts... cutting the subtitles by half.

VCD is 352x240 ONLY right? How come in kwag's templates there are all this different resolutions?

Kwags templates are considered xvcd - aka nonstandard vcd.

kwags templates are just a bunch of different xvcd or xsvcd templates he created. thats all

    XVCD? hummm...

maybe my player doesn't support that right? That's why the subtitles were cut off? Or if it didn't support it, it wouldn't even play?

Cuz I tought 352x480 was quite an improvement in quality, but the subtitles problem pretty much sucked... 6 hours of encoding for nothing.

    Thanks

If you are willing toi go up a cd why not try my cvd guide. You can use standard cvd or svcd subs nd they should work fine.

That could work if I had a computer DVD player, which I don't.

I download movies from the internet, burn them as VCDs and watch it on my standalone DVD player. So this guide has no use for me right?

    Thanks anyway!

Damn... this overscan thing is really a pain-in-the-ass.

the search returned tons of results (you were on almost all of them, hehe).

I think it's time someone write a FAQ or guide on overscan, I had never realized it cuz I only made fullscreen VCDs, this last one I made wide (with black bars).

Now I'm reencoding it on 352x240, and probably will get the same problem right? But it's already 59%, only 1:30 away... I don't wanna cancel it.

If I get the same overscan, I'll try and reduce the size by 5-10% to see if it works...

    thanks a lot!

    Ok... I got it.

But reducing by 5% was a little too close. I still miss the bottom tip from the subtitles, I won't encode it again. The movie is perfect, the "wide" aspect looks great with the black bars and all... and the quality kicks ass.

Next time though, I'll try 7%.

One question: overscan is only top-bottom or is it left-right too?

    Thanks everyone.

    It's all around.

It's just there to hide manufacturing tolerances and transmission tollerances that don't always match with the real world. If you have the option you can also place the subtitloes a little higher on the screen.
