I'm guessing I'll need VCD/SVCD to do this, but wouldn't this require more than one CD? I recently edited some home videos but, as you know, they were huge and I had to compress them, so I thought DiVX would be a good choice. Now I want to be able to play them on a home DVD player. What would I need to do?

You will be able to play them on your DVD player in either of those two formats only if your DVD player supports those formats. Check the compatibility chart to see if your player supports them.
