Use GordianKnot. Check out http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm

Make sure you install divX5.02 AFTER GordianKnot, and choose not to install divX 4 during the install of GordianKnot.

Try Vidomi --- it's painless, free, and of high quality. Lets you use a bunch of different codecs. Also lets you set the final size of the output.

gordian knot is a good all-in-one ripping/encoding solution.
It has a very nice autocrop function, will automaticly calculate
the bitrate to fit your movie to a given number of cds.
It has a few bugs/quirks:
-- it wants to re-install all software including codecs, dvd2avi,
smartripper, and avisynth.
-- it seems to be incompatible withe the latest (2.x) version of avisynth
(at least I had problems)
-- it doesn't handle multi-angle or branching dvds automaticly
(you have to rip them just righ ahead of time).
-- it doesn't handle interlaced movies well
-- you have to be careful the order in which you install your codecs,
expecially divx3/4/5. It is fairly easy to install divx 4 over divx 5, and that
causes gordian knot to fail to encode video.
-- you currently have to install it by installing an older version and then
applying patches to bring it up to date.
If you don't have any of the tools installed, and can get it installed
properly, and then just leave your set-up alone, gordian knot is a
very nice all-in-one solution with a really good demo/howto at doom9.org

I use gordian knot as my "default" encoder. For longer movies, or to
get around threstrictions above, I use the latest version of flask,
which is quite a bit faster but requires a lot more know-how to
use correctly.

I didn't know you could use FLaskMPEG for DivX (mind you, i have not used it all so that doesn't say a lot!).

I haven't heard of vidomi before. Where can I get it? Is it freeware?

Are there any guides for divX with either FLask or Vidomi?

EasyDivX is my choise when it comes to DVD ripping. Very painless and reliable.

Many guides point to xmpeg, which is essentially a code fork of flask 0.6 with a few of the bugs fixed. Since flask is open source, these kinds of things can happen. The latest version is 0.7something and it's worked very well for me.

I nice thing about gordian knot is that it calculates bits per pixel, which is an indication of when your resolution is set too high for a given bit rate. Generally speaking, if you want to fit a two hour movie to one cd using divx, you need to resize down to 640x352-ish. Flask doesn't
provide you with any easy reminder for this. Also, the crop tools in flask need work (though xmpeg has a good autocrop feature so maybe that code will wind up back in the main flask tree.)
