DVD copy hardware needed?

Hope this is in the correct forum.

I'll be purchasing a new PC in a week. I am interested in a setup that will allow me to create my own DVDs and to backup existing DVDs. I've decided on the Pioneer A05 DVD writer which comes out next week as my second CD drive. Now for the first CD drive. If I am backing up DVDs should the first drive be a DVD rom? Can I get away with a regular 48x CDROM and use the A05 for all of my DVD work?

Buy 16x dvd-rom(it also reads cd's)... the A05 is locked to 2x ripping speed so it's very slow!!!!

It's rare that a dvd will directly copy from one drive to another. If you want a second drive, just get a cd-rom, or a Fast CD-RW, if the A04 drive burns cds not as fast as new cd-rw drives (not sure of speed of a04 for cd-rw)

The A04 burns CD-R at 16x.
Not sure about the A05.

16X should be acceptable for most CD burning.

The A05 however can burn DVD-R at 4X, so that would be a good thing.

Personally, I have a TDK VeloCD 48x24x48 for CD burning and a Pioneer 104 for DVD burning. I haven't researched the possibility of 'backing up a DVD' from a dvd-rom to a dvd burner (I don't think it can be done), that's why I went for a CD burner and a DVD burner.

so you did not get the point? the ripping speed(dvd -> harddrive without copyprotection) with DVD-R(W) or DVD+R(W) is locked to 2 X !!!!

fast DVD-ROM gives you 6-8X Ripping speeds which is NICE!

A04 burns CD-r's 8X speed!
AO5 burns CD-r's 16X speed!

I would get the pioneer a05 only, unless the manufacturer uses a fast dvd-rom like a liteon 163. The pioneer stats say 12x dvdrom speed. But I have not seen a test verify this. If you can verify it will rip single and double dvds at an acceptable speed then get a cd-rw drive along with the pioneer a05. However if it rips as slowly as my a04 then you will want a separate dvdrom. Since the a05 will burn cds at 16x you will save more time on your dvd rips than on your cd burning. Unless you burn alot of cds. You can order with an a05 only and test and then buy a dvdrom or a cd-rw and install yourself. That way you will have a better understanding of what you want to primarily use the pc for and build it accordingly.

I have a a04 and a liteon 163 with a 40x plextor external usb2.0 cd writer. I can rip a dvd5 in 4-6 minutes and a dvd9 in 9-16 minutes, at least twice as fast as the a04 can rip.

Thanks for the responses. I'll think about it over the upcomming weekend. I'm planning on placing my order in one week. Then I'll have a tons of additional questions once my new PC arrives!
