Hello all. I've been trying in vain for the last few days to figure out how to convert my NTSC DVD to SVCD's. I've read countless posts and tutorials on the subject, mostly on this site, but I am now more confused than when I started. Lots of contradictory info out there. The main thing seems to be that there's no simple 1-step process you can use in ffmpegX if your source is NTSC (due to variable frame rates), is that right?
I'm an audio guy, and this is my first foray into digital video. Is there anyone out there willing to spell out the steps to accomplish this task? If there's a comprehensive thread or tutorial on this subject that I somehow missed, please post a link. Keep in mind that I don't own any expensive software like DVD Studio Pro.
Thanks so much...![]()

That's it, I'm convinced. PC users must be completely devoid of any intelligence. They use windoze and they can't read. THIS IS A MAC FORUM. It is clearly shown that the forum index is the Mac video forum. The very first thread states that this is a Mac forum and therefore only Mac questions/answers should be posted. For crying out loud, rockinstage makes clear reference to programs such as ffmpegX and DVD Studio Pro which are MAC ONLY. That must be why all these people use PC's, they can't read.

Go learn how to read and then go buy a Mac. Do it in that order.
Anyway, rock, you can either use ffmpegX or AfroPic to make perfectly in sync SVCD's (I assume VCD's to, but haven't tried them yet). Afropic pretty much does all the steps for you but I haven't totally figured that program out yet and it also seems slower than using ffmpegX. The way I do it with ffmpegX is like this:
After you've ripped your DVD with 0SEx, open up MPEG Power Tool, select your VOB, and choose the fix option.
Now append a ".mov" extension to the end of the VOB. Now it's ready for ffmpegX.
Open up ffmpegX, select your VOB w/.mov extension, type in the name you want to save it as, and select the MOV VOB DIVX--> SVCD preset.
Uncheck encode audio in the audio tab.
Under the VCD/SVCD tab, uncheck all encoding options except for altivec. Change your thread to dual CPU if you have one.
Under the tools tab, uncheck the author and split options and check keep elementary streams.
Now hit encode.
Once that is done, you will have a .m2v file.
Once again, open up ffmpegX and select your source file. This time you only want to encode your audio. Uncheck encode video. Under the audio tab, choose .mp2 codec, 224 or 128 bitrate, and 44.1 sampling.
Again, in the tools, make sure everything is unchecked except for keep elementary streams. Hit encode.
Once that is done, select your video and audio in the tools tab in the mpeg tools section. Select mux as SVCD, postprocess, author as SVCD, and split into X amount of chunks. Once that's done, drop the .img's in Toast as Multitrack XA and burn.

Thanks for the tips, very clear. I'm following all your steps in osex & ffmpegx, however, I have never heard of nor can locate MPEG Power Tool. Couldn't find it in the tools section of this site or by Google either. Is this part of some other package of tools under another name? Excuse my ignorance on this matter...
Thanks again,

SCB,
I have followed your tips, but am running into a strange error when attempting the first ffmpeg step. I've ripped with OSEx, I fixed with mpegpowertool, I added ".mov" to the file extension, I selected the file in ffmpeg and chose the options you suggested, but when I hit "encode" I get the following output in the terminal window:
Code:## Component Manager: attempting to find symbols in a component alias of type (regR/carP/x!bt) usage: movtoy4m -w width -h height -F a:b -a a:b movie.mov example: movtoy4m -w 352 -h 288 -F 25:1 -a 4:3 pal_normal.mov example: movtoy4m -w 352 -h 240 -F 30000:1001 -a 16:9 ntsc_wide.mov **ERROR: [mpeg2enc] Could not read YUV4MPEG2 header: system error (failed read/write)! ## Component Manager: attempting to find symbols in a component alias of type (regR/carP/x!bt) usage: movtoway -o output.wav movie.mov sh: /Volumes/Mac9/ALMOST_FAMOUS/almostfamous.wav: No such file or directory rm: /Volumes/Mac9/ALMOST_FAMOUS/almostfamous.wav: No such file or directory INFO: [mplex] mplex version 2.2.1 ($Date: 2002/04/20 19:08:30 $) **ERROR: [mplex] Unable to open file /Volumes/Mac 9/ALMOST_FAMOUS/almostfamous.m2v for reading. Encoding complete!
Any tips?
Thanks,

encoding: VCD
Audio/Mplex: select 48000 for sampling rate, force segment to 795MB

AfroPic is a great all-in-one program. Good luck and have fun!
