im still kinda baffled

i have been able to get a dvd onto a cdr but i was only able to play it on my pc with dvd player only.i dont remember how i even did that nor do i remember what software i used. i want to be able to backup dvds and also i want to be able to copy avi movies downloaded off the pc that will be playable in a home dvd player. can someone help me by telling me what i need as far as software and what steps to take. also can someone tell me how to determine what software to use if there is more than one for different operations. thanks to all replies
