  1. I was looking for a viwer for SVCD MPEG2 files to see if they were working. My system associated *.mpg to Windows media p[layer but couild not play the MPEG2 video it got an error.

I got the trial version of winDVD4 and winDVD3.1 not sure which one made windows media player able to now play MPEG2's

What I did is install the WIinDVD software and saw that my MPEG2's played just fine. First I tried winDVD4 then winDVD3.1. After each I uninstalled them. Then I reassociated the *.mpg's to Windows Media Player and now the MPEG2's play just fine. No Idea why but it looks like when I uninstalled the winDVD it left the files necessary for windows media player to run MPEG2.

Not absoulutely sure this is what did it but it was the only thing I did after trying to play the MPEG2 with windows media player before trying WinDVD and then windows media player again.

    Just passing this on.

  2. When you install WinDVD you also install an mpeg2 codec necessary for playing DVD films. When you uninstall it this does not remove the MPEG2 codec. This is the reason.

  3. COOL

It seems to work just fine. Is there a better MPEG2 Codec that would be better. I did not know that is what was needed. I only tried Windvd so I could test my MPEG2 encodes but Win DVD is not free.

    Thanks for the info.

You don't need windvd. Intsalling it put a mpeg-2 codec on your system that WMP can use. Unintslling it leaves that codec behind so that WMP can STILL use it. Its free

  6. The only problem with Win Media Player is that it won't aspect the picture correctly, whereas a software DVD player will. 720x576 will play OK (as will cvd and vcd res) but SVCD res of 480x576 won't playback correctly in Media Player.
