  3. Craig if you get one let me know what kind of speeds you get, mines the thoroughbred chip also. XP 2200 (1.8 ghz)

Have AMD cracked the 2.4 barrier yet?

Oops. I meant ripping and encoding. The rip itself doesn't take very long. I haven't done one in a while, but it never takes more than 15 minutes.

Actually, I don't mind leaving my machine on all night, but once I start encoding, I can't touch the computer. I might want to check something out late at night and have to wait until the next day.

TLTw: Have you done sample tests with different quality settings? I've tried using the high quality setting and it made the encode times ALOT longer than even the next lower setting. It's the law of diminishing returns here methinks. Just like using an archive program (rar/zip), the 'normal' setting will take a certain amount of time, while the 'maximum' setting will take sometimes over 2x to compress the same files. And the resultant file is only slightly smaller (if any) when compared to the normal setting.

I'd suggest getting a raw DVD rip, cut it down to 15-30mins or so, and cycle thru all of the quality settings with each encode and guage the time. If you have already done this and I didn't see it in the posts, please forgive me. At least then you should know the variation that the quality setting introduces into the equation.

  7. Try this on for size

    Athlon 2000+
    512 DDR 2100

The pilot episode of "the Soprano's" is exactly 1 hour long and I'm converting it right now from DIVX (323.634 Kb's) to SVCD 2520 bits 480*480 and AC3 in less than 19 minutes (17 elapsed, 2 remaining).

Well I'm converting at the Highest quality in TMPGenc. with no help what so ever except my swap (temp) file of 1 gig.

If anybody can beat this speed tell me about it, I'm always curious about the fastest PC.

  9. 1 Open TMPGenc
1a (press no if you get the wizard)
    2 press option
    3 environmental setting
    4 tab general
    5 temporary file -- > browse
6 use the drive with the most free space and select it (remember the ammount of free space)
    7 tab CPU
8 but a V in front of cache setting
9 put down the ammount of MB's you had free on the selected drive

    happy encoding

BTW I am using the official (bought) version of TMPGenc so I'm not sure this also applies to the shareware version

  11. If you install OS's a lot try using Norton GHOST

It's always nice to have a backup.
I backup my OS every month on a CD Rw I have 3 CD Rw's for it so I can always go back 3 months in case of an emergency like a malicious virus or something like it...

PS I doesn't work so well if you change PC's I did recently and than it might be smarter to just reinstall, 'cause Windoze tends to hang if you changed to much of your hardware (Everything in my case )
