I dont have a DVD burner yet..waiting for the Pioneer A05 so I don't really know what goes into backing up a dvd yet cuz I haven't researched it yet...so please forgive me if I'm asking a dumb question. Its 5:13am and I'm posting before I go to bed..lol

Why can't you just rip the .vob file from a dvd and then burn it to a DVD-RW? That doesn't work?

Is the encoding just so it will fit on 1 DVD-RW?

There are some dvd5 that can be copied verbatim using Smartripper & Nero, but they are in the minority. Most dvds are dvd9's that have high bitrate or long movies with multiple sountracks & making of..features + dvdrom content. The guides Adder_78 refers to will explain how to fit these movies on 1 or 2 dvdr's with or without the original extras/menus.

You were right about the re-encoding, it attempts to reduce the size of the video to allow it to fit on 1 disc without sacrificing too much quality
