  1. MPEGs stutter after converting in TMPGenc. The movies were captured off of my VCR some @ mpeg-2 and some @ mpeg-1(VCD) formats with my AverTV PVR using the RCA Cables. The files playback great no stuttering. When I reconvert them through TMPGenc to improve quality and/or convert to dvd or vcd format the output file (mpeg) stutters. Why is it doing this?

    TMPGenc 2.59
    Athlon 1.2Ghz
    256MB SDR-SDRAM
27.2GB 7200RPM (WinXP Pro, variety of 3D games and other stuff)
60GB 5400RPM (Used for video conversion and video file storage)
    RADEON 8500
    SBLive!
AverTV PVR (Use only RCA, not coax)
    Linksys 10/100 NIC

You don't say how your converting them. It's not really possible to "improve" the quality of the original. Any filter you apply is going to introduce it''s own artifact. You're probably better off with no filters. does your vcr have an S-video out jack? In my expierence stuttering can be minimize by using a lower resolution. Try a test at 352x240 or 352x480.

  4. Could be framerate problem - wrong template loaded or source file with an odd framerate.

  5. I have the Avertv Stereo.

What capture program did you use?

Did you try to play the captured file before encoding to see if that plays smooth? Just wondering if its the capture or the convertion

If in the US then you should capture NTSC 29.97FPS.

Did you run TMPC with its defaults for Video-CD, NTSC? If you use NTSC Film the framerate is reduces and makes things look a little "jerky".

  6. If you are planning to burn these to DVD, I'd put the 'jerky' video on a rewritable and see how it looks. I just had the same problem, but once I played them on the DVD it was smooth.

It could be the wrong field order, framerate, or the source is bad. Also, reencoding can't improve quality but lowers it. Tell us a little more about your source file.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

  8. Good lord, if people don't know the answer, people should keep quiet!

The answer, my friend, isn't an easy one: no one here knows how to fix it. Everyone suffers from it, everyone talks about it, everyone posts their systems specs and asks for encode setings, but no one knows a *thing* about why this issue is an issue, or how to fix it.

I can only offer these two bits of personal experience:

    1. Set the output to 30fps. NOT 29.7. This eases the stuttering greatly.

    2. Use Panasonic for CIF-compliant streams (352x240 MPEG-1), as this encoder completely eliminates all stuttering.

  9. Don't hate the world so much, GUTB. This also eases stuttering.

You must be kidding right??? My videos don't stutter period! The way to fix this guys problem is if we new his conversion process. Talk about posting a bunch of bull!
    Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack

  11. It stutters before encoding in TMPGenc, so I'm not sure why it does this.

This is your statement from your first post. Is this correct or is your latest post correct. If it is that latter post then A few idea:

First when I try to view the "raw" *.avi files in real player it shutters this program just can not process the *.avi's for me at all. The encoded versions to MPEG1 or MPEG2 run smooth.

If it is the capture what was the frame loss rate (dropped frames and total frames captured if you know). If the dropped frames is too high the capture will cause shutter.

What capture program did you use and what were your settings for FPS rate and resolution? This may help to understand your problem.

The latest post is the correct one now, I use the avertv's built in recorder using 720x480 resolution @ 3000kbps, 4000kbps I get less stutter as for dvd quality goes, but vcd it will play back fine with no noticable stuttering, the only problem is when I reencode vcd it stutters with tmpgenc when I try to use that program to soften up block noise. As for dvd quality recording none of the files can be used by tmpgenc except for the 3000kbps bit rate. This is really mind boggling. The dazzle I used had fewer problems with capturing (no-offense to avermedia). The only reason why I tend to use this is the fact I hardly ever get audio sync problems unlike the dazzle. I might just get the dvd creation station since I just got usb 2.0 ports and I finally have enough bandwidth to do captures using a dazzle. I will not be using the Dazzle junkware as I have already learned that mistake, I will be using Sonic MyDVD since it actually it works great, if I ever get this type of dazzle.
