Does anyone know why my SONY DRU-500A can write to the
Princo DVD-RW discs but not the Princo DVD-R discs?

this is strange that discs from the same manufacturer won't work the same

if anyone else has any similar problem let me know

or if you have a solution to this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

  5. Jarvis,

use ADVDInfo to obtain the "Pre-recorded Information in Lead-in" for those DVD-R discs.

If there's a "TDKG010000D9" c't magazine alledges that Sony disabled those discs at TDK's request.

My "TDKG02000000" disks (Bulkpaq label, Princo-manufactured) give out with a "Power calibrarion failure" error. I have unmarked DVD-Rs with the same ID but other parameters that work fine at 2x though... read my post here and its replies.

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=396523#396523

It seems going back to 1.0d is the only way to use them but I'm not sure if downgrading the firmware is possible.

  7. Donpedro,

Are you sure that your daewoo 5800 play Memorex DVD+RW?
    I thought Daewoo 5800 can't play any DVD-+RW.

  8. hxc3634, yes I am sure and it played Sony DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD+RW and Sony DVD-RW. Since I can play with my toys only during weekend, I will retest all of them again later.

Retested all DVD+R media. Worked in Daewoo DVD-5800 (man.date 2002-04)

  10. This is so weird! Anyone else experience this?

Standalone DVD players: Pioneer DV-343, Toshiba SD-3755

Also tried several discs and also burning data on DVD-RW - readable on DVD-ROM drives but not DRU-500A.

DRU-500A can read from generic P-DVD-R/2XPxx discs and the included Sony DVD+RW disc.

I experimented some more. I used Easy CD-Creator 5 to burn data onto one of the DVD-RW discs I had used - the DRU-500A can read this disc. I used DVD-Decrypter to burn a DVD-Video image file onto the same disc - the DRU-500A can read this disc. I therefore conclude that this brand of this type of disc is not compatible with Nero 5.5.9.17. Still seems weird though.

EDIT: Based on the date of nero.exe [Oct. 28, 2002] this would be the 5.5.9.17.0 version.

  16. I don't think anyone reported on all these brands with these formats yet -

    Media source: Staples
Media name: Memorex +RW, Maxell -RW, Maxell -R, Maxell +R
Authoring software: Maestro (for compiling m2v and AC3)
    Burning software: RecordNow Max 4.5
    Media's rated/certified max speed: +R/RW 2.4, -R 2x, -RW 1x
    Burning speed used: Max certified
    Firmware version/update: 1.0f
Computer DVD playback software results: PowerDVD wonderful
Computer DVD-ROM drives results: DRUgood, Creative DXR2 bad
Standalone DVD players results for each media/test -
Apex AD600A: +/- R excellent throughout, +/- RW reports no disc
Panasonic CP72 - ALL formats wonderful throughout playback.

(The only glitch I get is with the +RW and -RW. On the CP72, which plays them great, if I stop the disc, it will not start playing it again when I press play, and I have to turn off and on the player to unlock it. Until then, you can hear it repeatedly trying to read. This even happens with a single layer ISO copy. -R and +R were glitch free when stopping.)

Also tried Nero 5.5.9.17.0 as recommended for this drive using the recommended UDF 1.02 mode. Only tried the +RW, but neither player would recognize it.

  18. I found out Nero hadn't worked for me because of the misleading recommendations people were suggesting in this thread:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127624&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight...ysical&start=0

However, I did some more experimenting on my own, and I found that the following settings created a working disc in Nero 5.5.9.17.0 that would play on my new Panasonic CP72:

    DVD-ROM UDF/9660
    Check ISO level 1
    Check ISO9660
    Uncheck Joliet
Uncheck anything in "relax ISO restrictions"
    UDF 1.02

Now my results are equally good with both Nero and RecordNow Max. Sometime, I will test in more players.

  19. sorry if this is a stupid question...but does this stuff apply to the 500UL as well? That is the external version of the 500a I believe... Anyway, I am getting ready to purchase some DVD+Rs online, and am wondering which I should get. This will be really helpful if these apply to my DVD burner as well, otherwise I guess I will have to keep searching...

    Thanks

  21. Accu failure at 2x, Accu success at 1x
    RecordMax Fails, Nero works

    Details here:

    Test 1:

    Media source: http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/comdealfor473.html
    Media name: Accu
Authoring software: Maestro (for compiling m2v and AC3)
    Burning software: RecordNow Max 4.5
Media's rated/certified max speed: 1x, but they say 2x is reported to work
    Burning speed used: 2x
    Firmware version/update: 1.0f
Computer DVD playback software results: PowerDVD fails to play
Computer DVD-ROM drives results: DRU fails to read
Standalone DVD players results for each media/test -
Apex AD600A: reads through chapter 32 of 50, then freezes
    Panasonic CP72 - reads through chapter 36 of 50, then breaks up/freezes

    Test 2:
    Media source: http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/comdealfor473.html
    Media name: Accu
Authoring software: Maestro (for compiling m2v and AC3)
    Burning software: RecordNow Max 4.5
Media's rated/certified max speed: 1x, but they say 2x is reported to work
Burning speed used: 1x selected, but software still does 2x
    Firmware version/update: 1.0f
Computer DVD playback software results: PowerDVD fails to play
Computer DVD-ROM drives results: DRU fails to read
Standalone DVD players results for each media/test -
Apex AD600A: reads through chapter 32 of 50, then freezes
    Panasonic CP72 - reads through chapter 36 of 50, then breaks up/freezes

    Test 3:
    Media source: http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/comdealfor473.html
    Media name: Accu
Authoring software: Maestro (for compiling m2v and AC3)
    Burning software: Nero 5.5.9.17.0
Media's rated/certified max speed: 1x, but they say 2x is reported to work
Burning speed used: 1x (Nero actually burns it at 1x also!)
    Firmware version/update: 1.0f
Computer DVD playback software results: PowerDVD play fine
Computer DVD-ROM drives results: DRU plays fine, Creative DXR2 fails
Standalone DVD players results for each media/test -
    Apex AD600A - works fine
    Panasonic CP72 - works fine

    Moral of story:

Burn your cheapo DVD-Rs at 1x to ensure best compatibility through the entire surface of the DVD-R in all players.

    TIP
If you use RecordNow Max 4.5, and you choose 1x, watch the burning. After a couple minutes, you may suddenly see the "time remaining" drop from about 59 minutes down to about 30 minutes, clearly that it's still burning at 2x! This gives you a coaster. By using Nero, selecting 1x truly burned the DVDR at 1x, which took about 1 hour, and works perfectly.
