What is the simplest newbie guide to use enabling me to capture 5 seconds or so of various DVD movies into my home videos that I make with Pinnacle Studio 8 ? It's unclear to me from the various tools/packages/guides like DVD X Copy or DVD Copy Plus, or the freeware tools if there is an interim format readily found from the ripping in either avi or mpeg from which I could pull the 5 second scenes, as the whole focus appears to be duplicating an entire movie to VCD, SVCD, DVDR or whatever. Thanks.

I believe that the Pinnacle product only supports .AVI for editing. I could be wrong.
Have you looked at ULEAD Video Studio 6, http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm?
This handles both .AVI and .MPG formats for editing. -
DVD2AVI allows you to load a VOB and select a few seconds with
the brackets in lower right corner.
Save file as AVI.
Get DVD2AVI here:

Ofcource you need to rip the vob with dvd-decrypter first.
