How do I break an avi up?

Hey all I have some movies that are AVIs and are too long to fit onto a cd-r so I need to break em up into 2 files so I can use 2 cd-r's. What programs and so forth do I need to make this task happen?

Also I recently burned my first VCD and played it on my DVD player, it worked, it was all there, the sound was there, etc. Exept the sound in some parts of the film would skip and pop and crack. Is this because the mpeg might have been of a poor quality? Or is it my dvd player itself?Thanks in advance.
