  1. Can you believe this ? New firmware from Sony.

    1.0e

    http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm

"This new firmware will allow your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD+R media as well as improve the DVD-ROM reading performance with DVD recordable/rewritable media."

Only problem that I see is that link to new file is missing

  2. It also now says

We expect this firmware to be released on or before December 9th, 2002. Please check back on this site then to download and install the firmware. We anticipate that 4X compatible DVD+R media will be commercially available later in December.
At least they are updating their firmware - I don't think HP has been as diligent about this.

  3. Now DRU500A has better spec than NEC ND-1100
    Thanks for good news.

  4. All I can say is wow!

Sony doesn't even need to give the DRU500A 4X +R support since they don't advertise the drive as being 4X +R compatible, but they're going to do it anyway.

    I'm very impressed with Sony.

Oh yes they must. Remember Sony backs DVD+RW, so it would be highly illogical that a drive sony makes does not support next generation DVD+R.

  6. Wow, a company actually adding features to a product after the fact! What a concept!

  7. My opinion of Sony (I had previously heard some bad things about them not updating firmware on CD burners often enough) keeps going up:

First the quick release of firmware 1.0d to fix burning issues with a number of DVD-R brands, including the cheap Princo and DVDPro brands etc.

Now a free firmware upgrade (1.0e) to add 4X DVD+R writing.

Good job Sony; all this for $228 shipped!

He most likely got it through Dell. They had some stackable coupons about 6 weeks ago.My drive was even cheaper. After they cancelled my order 3 times, they sent me one free! They upgraded my shipping to next day. When I called to find out why they shipped ground, they gave me $20 credit .Net cost nothing + $20 in my account!

It clearly says on their site:

"We expect this firmware to be released on or before December 9th, 2002. Please check back on this site then to download and install the firmware. We anticipate that 4X compatible DVD+R media will be commercially available later in December. "

So, the link will be active in a couple of weeks. <g>

    Also waiting!
