I understand the difference vbr & cbr, but what exactly is CQ. How does that work?

CQ = Constant Quality. It is a form of one pass variable bitrate encoding. It is much faster than 2-pass VBR but a bit slower than CBR. It will produce better quality results than CBR and in some case comes very close to 2-pass VBR. The main problem with this mode is that it is very difficult to predict the final filesize.
