I'm going to set up a new system and will burn VCD copies of my D8 videotapes (first timer) for archiving purposes. No editing planned, just capture whole 60 min. tape, then burn to VCD. Prefer Windows ME but might have to use Windows 2000 which has no 4Gb file size limit. But I just read that "Seamless Capture" of ULead VideoStudio 5.0 allows capture of video files bigger than 4 Gb in a FAT32 file system. To clarify, does this mean I can then use Win ME instead? Also, if I decide to burn in SVCD (MPEG-2), how many minutes of video in an 800 Mb CD-R disc? Thanks.

  2. Yes, several programs allow you to capture several 2GB files, they will play back seamless. Popular choices are Virtual Dub (freeware) and AVI_IO (shareware - demo has 8GB limit). I use AVI_IO as I get fewer dropped frames with it

  3. on a 80min. 700MB CD-R you get around 38min. upto 39min. if you overburn.
On the new 99min. 850MB Cd-R's you get 49min. must use NERO 5.5 and overburn to 98min. 15 seconds setup in expert properties. This is for SVCD compliant CD-R.
So if you plan on 60min. plan on using 2 CD's.

  4. You should be aware that Windows 2000 can handle both the NTFS and the FAT32 filesystem. If you choose Win2K solely for the purpose of avoiding the filesize limit, be sure you do NOT select FAT32 when installing!! Personally, I would go with FAT32 anyway, and just use a multisegment capture utility (ie VirtualDub), because NTFS is less efficient for data storage (cluster size issue) and can cause compatibility problems when interacting with other computers/filesystems. It's basically a waste unless you need the extra file security features.

    Thanks for responses.

thxkid: how would you tell if CD-R is SVCD compliant? We only have 80 min. CD-R's here in the Philippines.

Vejita-sama/kinneera: I too prefer FAT32 (WinME) for better compatibility, esp. with games, and now it seems that it is an option for me because of multisegment capture utilities which will provide a work-around for the 4Gb file size limit. Am I correct?
I will have to use Ulead VideoStudio 5.0 SE because it was bundled with my Firewire PCI card. Are VirtualDub and AVI-IO similar to this, or are they totally different? Any good?

  6. I think what he means by SVCD-compliant is whether or not the device you intend to play the CD back in recognizes the media you choose. Otherwise, it doesn't matter what type of CD-R you use.

You are exactly right about employing multisegment capture to solve your problem. Honestly don't know about VirtualDub's ability to capture from DV using a firewire card. Might just be as simple as selecting a different input source in capture mode, but I don't really know since I've never tried. Someone else help out here?
