  1. My research continues with Honestech Mpeg editor.

If you manage to create a svcd file which isnt compliant with Nero. I have tested this method with Nero 5.10 and the mpeg2 plug in. Nero will correct a non compliant file.

There is a setting to tell Nero to try and fit a file on the disk i.e. squeeze it in, but it didnt work for me.

    Good luck folks.

Spruce Maestro is a DVD authoring app (one of the very best!) that was consumed by Apple in July,2001 and has since been in limbo. It use to cost $8k+ , and purportedly is still available to some VAR channels (thank you...), also old warez versions were flying around the net awhile back.

Those of us who have been fortunate enough to work with a Spruce system still talk about it and there seems to be a number of them here on this site.

I'm sorry if that seemed a tease. On a cheaper note, I've tried M2edit and it seems to do a good job. Womble sometimes re-encodes. I'd go with bbMpeg even though the interface isn't conducive to easy editing. You can't beat FREE.

    jeffr,

Why wasn't the file complient with Nero ? Nero will always tell you why. Then if you want, you can go past it. I have found that if a file IS SVCD complient:
    For Pal
    max ~2524 kbit/sec MPEG-2 (if the audio is in 224 kbit/s), audio + video bitrate max bitrate is ~2748 kbit/s. 480 x 576 pixels (CVD 352x576)
    25 frames/second
    For NTSC
    Video:
max ~2524 kbit/sec MPEG-2 (if the audio is in 224 kbit/s), audio + video bitrate max bitrate is ~2748 kbit/s.
    480 x 480 pixels (CVD 352x480) 29,97 frames/second
23,976 frames/second with 3:2 pulldown (NTSC Film) with up to 4 Subtitles
    For audio, they are both from 32 - 384 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2
with up to 2 Audio Tracks

Can you make the files standard SVCS complient with Honestech ?

I wonder if you investigated getting you're money back or what tech support had to say.

I may have something to say about Honestech, which is pretty amazing, but I won't do it until I double check it out.

Cornucopia - Too bad about Maestro .... that is for me.

    Thanks,

    Jon

  5. Hi again

As I reported earlier Honest tech has done some weird stuff to my mpeg 2 files. For those reading the post for the first time my PAL VBR mpeg2 files are created by a realtime capture card that has the Philips and Stream Machine chips onboard.

Honestech has not produced Nero-compliant SVCD files to date. It has exploded files after editing them and has done other things like creation of a title file and joining to a part of a file correctly.

I found that once the files from Honestech are run through Tmpgenc, the files will burn correctly. Also from the previous comment, if you have the later version of Nero or Nerovision with mpeg2 plugin, Nero will correct the svcd file before allowing you to burn.

Tmpgenc still have a place in my editing suite: it crops, does colour correction, creates a compliant SVCD file. I just have to find out tools the split and join.

  6. nanoPEG Editor 2.3 (http://www.nanocosmos.de/) Hauppauge Edition came with WinTV PVR-250 h/w mpeg 1/2 capture to edit. V2.3 recent update tothe 2.2 that came with card.

Basic cut/join MPEG1 and MPEG2. Seems to work reasonably well. Before I upgraded drivers & version of editor, had a very few VCD files that it V2.2 hung up on and I had to do in TMPGEnc, now that no longer happens.

Window size fixed, slider to move through clip - so as get longer clips (1 hour plus) the slider increments get larger. Can also play (w/audio) real time to move ahead, and keyframe jump buttons 1 and 10 at a time forward/back.

Mark intervals cut in/cut out. Repeat. Can be multiple source files to multiple intervals, to generate single output file (cut and join).

Only real problem has been that occaisionally on marking IN, the final video includes a few frames before the visible frame, sometimes getting the end of a commercial in a tight cut - something which seems to occur with other cutter/joiners. Also - hear audio in play mode, but no visible audio graph in frame mode - so can be cleanest cut.

This version requires the PVR-250 in the computer, but they apparently sell a version as well (don't know dollars, etc).

Have made VCDs and DVDs with Nero and Ulead DVD Movie Factory with the output w/out problems.

  7. Refund from Honestech.

I have sent them an email to advise that their product does not work correctly.

I can also advise that other features of the program dont work 100% eg saving to avi.

Honestech claims to be able to take different file formats and join them together to create one type. I dont have such a requirement so I haven't tested it.

I find it very dissapointing that software manufacturers release products that do not work as claimed in their advertisement. MyFlix XE (the software written in Australia) places a disclaimer on their web site that your files should be tested before use with the demo and that it may not work with all files.

I have a different point of view about Honestech, without ever using their products. If they did refund your product within 30 days, that is really standing up for their product and doing what they said they would do.
Also, if their editor can " take different file formats and join them together to create one type.". That is something that M2-Edit can't do automatically.

You gave a great example about Xflix XE. They make M2-edit as well. If you look on the web site of LSX, they tell you that you had better do the demo, even though it gives only about 5 minutes or so of encoding. color=blue][/color]They will not refund your money.

I think I might know what the problem is with Honestech. It will not support VBR, therefore messing up and making incompatible formats.

    Really inflexible.

    Waste of time.
