  1. ok here's what i did. i had extracted the vob files from a dvd and then used extractor to join them and split them into the component streams. after i did this i previewed the resulting m2v file in vlc and it played just fine. the file is about 5 gb so i needed to reencode it at a lower bitrate. i imported the video file into quicktime and started the player to make sure it would play. it gets about 14 minutes into the movie and then it just plays the same frame for the last 2 hours. again this video plays just fine in vlc i can watch it from beginning to end.

so whats going on with quicktime?

p.s. the video file is exactly 4.69 gb.

  2. Use a mpeg-2 splitter like JAW to split the video file into chunks 2GB or less. Then import into QT, reduce the bitrate and then rejoin the chuncks. I hear. I've heard people mention that QT (both in OS9 and X) has problems just like you described, reading files over 2GB.

the file size issue actually occurs at 4gigs, the way i usually make the split the streams is rip to m2v and ac3 in osex and then multiplex setting the size limit to 4000 megs. splitting the m2v stream in jaw doesnt always work properly (from what i hear) and u DONT DONT DONT ever want to re-encode JUST m2v video to m2v video in qt... 1) its REALLLLLLLLY slow to open large m2v files 2) you will have the same frame lockup issue even with m2v files smaller than 4 gigs (qt hates mpeg-1,2 video streams by themselves) That is why i rip to m2v and ac3 then mux and encode them seperately... after u encode them seperately u will get 2 m2v files that you can join together in mpgtx, keep the original audio from the first rip and re-encode if necessary.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.
