I have continued playing around with ffmpeg taking your previous advice into account but I still have a couple of questions.

Since my orginal movie is a non-standard size (512 X 352) is there a way to have ffmpeg crop or fit the image within the final video frame (like quicktime export options). Every time I export the file it comes out sqashed or stretched. What can I do to avoid this. Final file size does not have to be 512 X 322. I will be just as happy with standard vcd size as long as I can get the best quality for that size

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

keep up the good work! ffmpegX rocks!! I would much rather export with it than quicktime pro.

  2. If you encode for playback on a DVD player, you don't have many size options. For VCD it has to be VCD size. For XVCD you can pick VCD size or DVD size. For SVCD it has to be SVCD size. For XSVCD either SVCD or DVD size. If your source is MOV then ffmpegX will adjust ratio and add black bars so as it will play OK on your TV.

Thanks again Thats exactly the information I needed. I've been setting unconstrained and typing in the actual movie size (to try and keep the quality really high) instead of choosing a set size. It should work much better now.
