After putting together my first movie using Ulead video studio 6, I had a problem burning the cd. I used svcd settings to copy some home hi8 and the movie seemed to render ok. In the next step, I got the msg "failed performing power calibration" when I went to create the svcd. The cdrw is a new TDK Velocd 40x12x48x and I have successfully burned some audio cds using Nero. Anyone have a clue what this is all about? Thanks in advance.

  2. May be anything ranging from bad media to drive overheating and having burning engine incompatibility inbetween. Have seen similar message from virtually every burning SW (except Ulead), before I installed cooler for CD-RW. But as Nero works well for You, this may not be Yor case, but they still use different burning engine and power calibration.
You can still burn with Nero anyway.

  3. Write cals determine the best write laser power by writing a range of samples on a non-data area of the CD, then reading them back. I believe the orange book allows for 100 attempts, so if the recorder exceeds this limit it will fail. Another reason for failure would be if the writer cannot find a write laser power setting that can be read back with a certain reflectivity. Depending on the firmware, it may give up after a certain number rather than use the whole 100 sample spaces.

The writer does return a specific code for the error; it is up to the application to determine what error it shows to the user. My point here is that the app may not give you enough information to accurately track down the real problem. If you try the same actions through Nero, you might be able to get more detailed error information.

Thanks for the feedback. One problem I discovered, after reading the TDK Velocd specs more closely, is that the 40x16x48x burner does not support svcd. I even downloaded and flashed the newest firmware. I used Ulead sv6 to put together a short compilation of clips in vcd format but I got the same message when it went through the simulation prior to burning. I then tried and was successful in burning a vcd with Nero. I am not to happy with the quality of the video though. It seems very grainy when compared to the same footage run for the camera directly into the tv. It may be that I have to play around with the settings to get a better rendering of the clips. So, I'm still puzzled as to problem with Ulead sv6 not being able to burn a vcd and how to get a better capture/rendering of the hi8 camera clips. Any suggestions? Tia.
