  1. I have a Pioneer 104 DVD writer, and a stand-alone Panasonic RV32 DVD Player.

I am able to backup disks (films), either disk-to-disk or re-encoding using TMPG Enc, and they appear to play OK on my PC and on a friend stand-alone DVD Player.... But when I try on my Panasonic I get a 'disk not recognized' error message.

I have tried some DVD-Rs created by someone else, one works and the others don't. If I disk-to-disk the one that works then the new one also works (which means the DVD writer is working!).

The suppliers of my Panasonic are not being overly helpful, after a 'heated discussion' I believe macrovision may still be enabled on it (if that has any effect?). Does anyone know how to disable it? It has alreay been chipped to make it multi-region.

Am I missing a step during my writing process that solves this problem? I am using the 'DVD 2 DVDR for Dummies' (http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/intro.htm) instructions on this site.

it wouldnt mater if macrovision was enabled on it or not ..

comments on this player here are less than great on compatability (though the score doesnt reflect this - odd) ,, seems to be a lot of problems with svcd's and some dvd's but its really hit or miss.

a LOT of people couldnt get dvd-r to work and even more said svcd's dont work .

someone mentioned using bitset utility found at http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html to get dvd-r working ..

  3. It is either a problem with the media you are using (standalone players can be fussy), or you are not authoring it as DVD-video correctly or you are burning it wrongly (lots of choices I know).

From your description I would suspect Authoring or Media. First I would suggest buying some quality media such as TDK, memorex Apple or Pioneer to see if this helps.

I would also look at the DVD authoring guides on this site and compare them with what you are doing. (Though if you are using DVD WS you should be OK)

How are you actually burning the disks, I use Nero with my A03, others reccomened Prassi Primo DVD.

What make is you mates player, look it and yours up on the DVD players list on this site to see if anyone else has found compatibility issues.

BTW, it has nothing to do with Macrovision.

Nothing concrete, just a few suggestions. Maybe one of them will help!

  4. I have a pioneer 104 and 2 dvd stand alone players, one is a wintel which will play anything you dish out to it , the other is a philips 951 which is very fussy.
I have found that if I make a backup and just re-encode the movie(re-mpeg) or do stream processing with dvd decrypter ,then create new ifos with ifoedit they both will play the dvd-r.If I copy menu files back in, then the philips player most of the time will not recognise the dvd-r.
I feel that you should try to create a dvd-r movie only and create new ifos and try this.
I have also found that even with a dvd-5 backup to get the most compatability with all players you should rip to hard drive first and then get vts sectors with ifoedit.
When I try to copy an iso image say with dvd decrypter my philips player will not read the dvd-r.
I have done over 60 bakups in the last 6 weeks
    I hope this helps
