  1. Hi there,

I've been doing various captures, rips and conversions for a while now and am fairly confident and happy with the results. However, every now and again I have problems with field interlacing.

As a rule I capture SVHS (using huffy) at, or rip and resize to, 352x576 (480 for NTSC DVDs) and then encode to a SVCD compatable MPEG2 stream.

What difference would it make if I de-interlaced before MPEG2 encoding (other than presumably preventing the occassional problems I have) and which method would give the best results - if it is at all advisable?

I await your knowledgable answers and comments

Some purists feel there's no adequate way to deinterlace. Blending fields isn't enough so a smart bob or smart weave or some other time consuming algorithm such as Smart Deinterlace filter for avisynth or vdub must be used. see http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/interlace.htm I display my Divx and Mpeg2 encodes on a projector and large computer display so I capture to Mpeg 2 I frame with my ATI AIW in progressive mode. I never have to deinterlace with software which for me would never be worth the time invested. If you are going to always display on a TV keep it interlaced and don't worry about it. If you use computer displays alot don't ever capture interlaced to begin with.
