I am trying to convert a pal divx file over to xvcd using ffmpegX version g. The original file is 512 X 352 but every time I convert it to xvcd (or vcd) with ffmpeg it comes out 512 x 322 and everything is squished even though I set an unconstrained aspect ratio and typed in 512 X 352. Is there a way around this? I would much rather use ffmpeg to convert these files than quicktime as it is much faster and I have a lot of files of this size to convert.

Thanks for any help (even if it is just to tell me that I will have to use quicktime). It will be much appreciated.

  2. Some hints:

1/ Only choose compliant image sizes for xvcd, vcd and svcd (xvcd sizes are the same as dvd and vcd sizes). Pick a size and a format closer and best suited to your source material size and quality.
2/ Try to run first your divx into divx doctor II from 3ivx.com and encode the .mov container instead of the .avi (different scaling and letterboxing routines will then be used, possibly leading to better results)
3/ Use Mpeg Info to check the resulting image size, as Quicktime player can show you a different display size value after applying an automatic correction for square pixels.

Thanks major, I'll experiment some more.

I do have to say that ffmpegX rocks overall. These files are the only one I have been having trouble with.

I took all the files I have to export and converted them to .mov using divx doctor first as I figured that may cut the export time down a bit.

Is there a way to crop or make your video fit in the final size (as you have the options in quicktime export) when using ffmpeg?

Where would I find the mpeg info fuction? Is it a part of ffmpeg or something outside?

    Thanks again.

If you encode .mov to SVCD/VCD it will automatically fit horizontally and add black bars vertically as needed.

Mpeg Info is another app, you can find it on versiontracker.com
