What have I done wrong !

As a novice I’m attempting to download films/video and burn them onto 700Mb x 70min CDR’s for viewing in our home CD Player which plays DVD, VCD, CDR, CDRW & HDCD (half of which I don’t even know what they mean)

However, although I’ve tried to follow the helpful advice on the forums and from others posts I seem to have come up against a problem, although the downloaded file was 719Mb which if edited out a little no doubt I could have fit it on a CDR it’s format was *.AVI and this I’m told needed changing to an Mpeg file before it could be burnt onto a CDR, so using TMPGEnc, I converted it to a Mpeg file but now it’s size is 1.1Gb so no way will it fit on to a CDR.

What have I done wrong or where do I go from here !

I do have FlaskMpeg but don’t know if I should be evening trying this or what format to use so I can (a) reduce it to below 700Mb and (b) put it in a format that will play in my above CD Player.

    Any help/advice appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Regards

  2. Well, you can either plug your TV to your computer, and watch it that way (with no loss of quality due to reencoding and all), and without having to burn any CD, or then, you can convert it so a (S)VCD, either split it on 2 discs, or fiddle with al settings to make it fit (KWAG has some templates that will let you fit a lot of stuff on a CD). But, the final quality will most definately change depending on what method. That is your call... Good luck.

Lets assume the mpeg you created was standard VCD. In this case 1min = 10mb and as it is burnt to CD in a different way from ordinary Data CD's you can get 740Mb onto a 70min CD and 800Mb onto an 80min CD. So the amount of video you can fit onto a CD is constarined by the length of the video. If it is iver 80mins you need to split it to two disks.

SVCD is slightly different in that it may use variable bitrate encoding, so the length of video you can fit on one CD depends on your encoder settings and especially the Average bitrate specified. Typical is 40-45mins per 80min CD.

I suggest you take a look at some of the gudeis on this site and learn what (S)VCD is all about before going any further.

Thanks for that bugster quite enlightening.

I have actually been looking at quite a few posts and the newbies guide on here but I think unless you already have an inclination towards a certain subject then it's extra difficult to take in, especially when one isn't as young as one used to be you know, for example the term "gudeis" although sounds rather elaborate is somewhat baffling.

However, I don't give up to easily.
    Many thanks
