1. I have a now have a Quad-boot PC with the Edition of XPpro 5.1(2600)
I have used the 4.60 ver of Adaptec's ASPI drivers for Win98se, WinME
and never had a problem to this day using Smartripper, DVDx, and VCDeasy to make VCD's.

With XPpro I tried to use the ASPI Ver. 4.60 with ForceASPI 1.17

but I get this white translucent overlay when I playback the MPEG file.
I then Dumped the 4.60 V. and installed the
4.71.2 version of ASPI , again Smartripper 2.41 works, but the DVDx
creates the same white ovelay MPEG's and I wondered if anyone else had this problem, and what I can do to fix it.

I have also tried the Nero ASPI Ver, that you copy and paste to
%Windows/system32 as stated with the directions for the ASPI layer but that made things worse, after I removed the old ASPI files, and ran DVDx again, it did not work at all. So, I went back to 4.71

Dagrafixman,
In case you didn't know Adaptec recently upgraded the ASPI version to v4.72a2. It might be worth giving it a try. Seems to work fine on my system.

3. My version of XP came with 4.59 on it and nothing that used ASPI would work. Not PowerDVD, not Smartripper or DVDDecrypter- nothing. I read that 4.6 has the greatest compatibility, installed it and now everything is fine.

To quote from an article I recently read just to set the facts straight:
SPTI or SCSI Pass Through Interface is standard available on Windows NT4, 2K and XP.
Under these OS (NT4, 2K or XP), Aspi is not installed by default. However, as a user, you could have installed Aspi or another application might have done it for you. Whether Aspi is installed or not, SPTI is standard used under Windows NT4, 2K and XP.

As you can plainly see no version of XP comes with an ASPI layer by default. More than likely it was installed by a 3rd party app such as RealOne player. To reiterate my previous post, Adaptec recently upgraded the ASPI version and from personal experience works perfectly.

5. damn this version of XP.

I now have the 4.72a2 ASPI drivers installed, aparently there are only 2 drivers ASPI32.SYS 4.71.2 and WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.2 as is states on ASPICHK that the middle two are not installed, are mine installed correctly? or is there supposed to be 4.60 v drivers for the middle 2
wowpost.exe and winaspi.dll?

I apologize for keeping asking but I would realy like to use XPpro to burn my VCD's as I runs the programs much faster 8)
but the 4.72 version still produces the same white overlay on my outputted MPEGS from DVDx

Run the "aspinit.exe" after running the install.bat file and reboot. I know the Adaptec site states otherwise, but after doing this your ASPI layer should show the following:
ASPI32.SYS 4.71.2 16877 bytes
WOWPOST.EXE 4.6 (1021) 4672 bytes
WINASPI.DLL 4.6 (1021) 5600 bytes
WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.2 45056 bytes

I did it this way and it works fine for me.

Wierd. I wonder which program it was. The next time I reinstall everything, I'm going to watch and see.

I think I'm going to hold off on the latest version until something doesn't work. Everything I use my computer for right now works great. I see no reason to leave 4.6. But it's good to know that when I do, the later version will work

9. Thanks,
Well I installed the 4.72a2 first running the Install.bat and aspinit.exe
and rebooted, still the same problem, even though my ASPICHK was:

ASPI32.SYS 4.71.2 16877 bytes
WOWPOST.EXE 4.6 (1021) 4672 bytes
WINASPI.DLL 4.6 (1021) 5600 bytes
WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.2 45056 bytes

I belive they are the same.

This copy of XPpro is going back to the store, maybe another will give me better results . I will post and let you all know, and thx for all the help!!!

10. Well new copy of XPpro, and I started with ASPI 4.72a2

Same old problem, I guess some problems can't be fixed on certain OS

I am glad I still have Win98se, and WinME at least I can still make SVCD's no problem on them, it just takes a little longer

Before going to that radical a step you might want to consider the fact it's a display driver issue causing this because that's what it's beginning to look like to me. Also what MPEG-2 codec are you using? At this point I'm just guessing, it seems one or the other is at fault and not the ASPI layer since one doesn't have anything to do with the other.

12. I am using the Adobe Premier Video Codec
and I have a Radeon9000 Video card that, I have the latest ATI XP release 6-13-10-6166-efg.

It happens regardless of using the codec or not.

One interesting point, as I have a Quad-Boot with Win98se, WinME, WinXPhome & XPpro, I was trying to run the DVDx 2.0 in windowsME
and the same whitishgrey overlay, was seen, I ran ASPICHK on ME and it was missing the bottom 2 drivers, I forced the 4.60 version rebooted and ran ASPICHK again, all there. DVDx then ran flawlessly.

I am also a member of www.xp-erience.com and in the Newbie section
I was able to attach an RAR file of an MPEG that is produced by XP to show what it looks like. my post is under : Dagrafixman there as well.
