  1. Anybody buying this drive should be aware that its the 100i, i.e. it doesn't support DVD+R media, only DVD+RW.

The HP100 & 200i is god awful. Do not I repeats do not buy this DVD writer. The only DVD's it takes is the DVDrw +rw which is the most expensive DVD and basically the only thing u can do with a DVD-rw is put data on them. they made this dvd writer to rip people off. They probably screwed it up some where when they tried to make it.

  8. HP are well known for crappy CD burners already, and it's not looking much better for DVD writers it seems. Hate their digital cameras, adn it seems like Epson printers are much better too than HP's. I wonder if HP ever does anything right.

Please tell us what is the best one to buy. The Sony DRU500A? I have the 100i, 200i, 103 and 104. The biggest key to getting good burns on all of these is decent media. The includes CD-R/W.

  10. I've been using the hp200e for a few months now (which are made my Ricoh by the way) and have never had one disk thats failed to burn. Ive used 5 different media so far ranging from the expensive hp media down to the cheaper intenso dvd+R disks (£1.50 each), and the discs have played in everything, from a high end sony dvd player to my ps2 & cheap Apex. I've tried 3 other players as well, and all worked. There has been no skipping whilst watching the movies I produce and no audio sync problems.
From personal experience, I've got no problems with HP's cd writers either. I've still got a 4 year old hp writer (made by phillips) in a pc that still working fine, and I've never had a problem with it.

  11. I have the Pionner A04 since 1 month.
    never got any error.
Original software is very poor. Ulead DVD workshop is promissing. I'm starting with it.
Pionner will release the A05 this month, and price is going down.
I beleave the A05 -R format will win.

  12. Still too pricey for a burner that can only burn 1 DVD format (DVD+RW).
That media, as most know, is the most expensive too...

For $40 more some of us got a DRU-500A, which does all four popular DVD formats... Granted it we got a nice deal on the DRU-500A, so the price is higher now, but $179 for an HP DVD-100i is still too much for what it can do.
If you don't have the money to pay a bit more, wait a few months for the after Christmas specials; in addition, by then there will be more competition as more companies have announced that they will be manufacturing DVD burners.
We will get the difference back in no time by using cheap media

In addition, there have been nice deals recently ($150 after $50 rebate for a CenDyne which is rebadged Pioneer A04).

    Just my opinion

Where did you get your drivers for your pioneer 104? I have a winxp pro os and have tried so many different aspi drivers i have given up. The firmware ones wont work, unless i am doing something wrong?

It does not matter now to talk about which format to win. Just buy Sony DRU-500A or wait for NEC or TDK or Sanyo or even LiteOn or LG. Plextor, Yamaha, Mitsumi, Samsung, Asus will all sooner or later introduce DVD writers as well.

If you cannot have Sony DRU-500A but still want a DVD writer right now...

For those who can afford the more expensive 2.4x DVD+RW and 2.4x DVD+R media, Ricoh MP5125A and its OEM drives. For everyone else, Pioneer DVR-A05 or cheaper drives that can write to DVD-R.

    1,000 2.4x DVD+R Ritek media (100-disc packs) for $1,700.

    1,000 1x DVD-R Princo media (100-disc packs) for $590.

  15. IIRC, all DVD+R writers except the new multi format ones are rebadged Ricoh mechanisms. Therefore, they're all very similar. I used an HP 200i and liked it a lot. It also rips video DVDs a hell of a lot faster than my Sony 500! Like 8x vs. 2x.

I have the HP 200i and have yet to have a problem. I know HP isn't very popular around here, but my experience is nothing but good...

  17. I have a HP DVD 200e and I have never had a problem with the drive - I do wish that the media would get about $2 cheaper. The Sonic My DVD software that comes with the drive is very bad. I changed to dazzle DVD complete and like it a lot.
