  1. I just got the WinTV PVR250 and captured a 3min sample clip using DVD standard. resoultion/bitrate/audio. to a MPEG2 file

I get a message that said "MPEG Import Filter: pack synchronization error" when I try to open the MPEG2 file with VirtualDub.

infact VirtualDub can't open any of the mpeg files I recorded, mpeg1/vcd, svcd, mppeg2.

is there a plugin or something I can get for virtual dub that can help me load up the file for processing?

    thanks in advance

VirtualDub can't open MPEG-2 files directly. I suggest using DVD2AVI: http://arbor.ee.ntu.edu.tw/~jackei/dvd2avi/ to create a .d2v project file and then pass this thru the VFAPI Converter: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/vfapi_codec.cfm to create a fake avi file. I also suggest looking thru the how-to guides concerning frameserving.
    Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack

  4. while I can't complain about the quality of the captures.

but damn, I can't open any of the captured files. including mpeg1 files that it created.

I never had problem opening mpeg1/avi etc.. files created from my old Dazzle1, WinTV FM, PV233.

Any software DVD player will open mpeg1 files. Look in the tools section of this site for dedicated mpeg1 players.

  6. Try AVISynth. V-dub can open an avs file directly. You need to install it, write a quick script and then open your whatever.avs file with v-dub. You can then edit or whatever you like.
entirely TOO much time on my hands

  7. thanks for everyone's help so far.

when I mean can't open Mpeg1 files. I mean I can't open it with TmpEnc
to reencode, edit/conver to VCD complient format.

all those files I can Play with no problem.

I manage to get Virtual Dub to load up a MPEG2 file using DVD2AVI and the VFAPI thingy, but after I do an encoded to Divx with Vdub I get no audio even the "fake" avi files that it creates play with no audio..

thanks for everyone's help so far

  8. VFAPI doesn't do audio. You need to "save as wav" with v-dub and then multiplex the a/v together with something like TMPG

  10. I can't open mpeg1 with Vdub either I was thinking of capturing MPEG1 at highbitrate and then reencode it to Divx with Vdub (like I use to do with my PV233) or TmpEnc it to VCD (because TmpEnc gives kick ass VCD quality)

the reason I want to open mpeg2 with VDUB is to reencode it to DivX5
or TmpEnc to VCD at a later time

as I do not have a DVD burner (yet

Why don't you use FlasKMPEG to reencode to divx (MPG2)

    For TMPGEnc
select Mpg tools under files, then use Simple Multiplex and now you can load it into Vdub. (MPG1)
