  1. Ok I am about to give up

Here is what I have tried

    1) TDK DVD-R (Readable in DRU500A and my PC DVD drive but no standalones (tried 3 differnt brands)
    2) TDK DVD+RW (Readable only in DRU500a)
    3) Generic DVD-R (writes fine but wont read in anything)
    4) Memorex DVD+R (reads in DRU500a but nothing else)

The same memorex DVD+R's mentioned in #4 read perfectly in both of my standalone dvd players if written to with the philips dvd+r drive, but when the sony writes them .. Nothing !

    What software you ask ?

    1) Nero 5.5.9.17
    2) RecordNow 4.5 (included with the sony drive)
    3) Disc Decrypter (writing an image made my Ifoedit)

Now what am i using as a test bed ? Windtalkers 4x3 version ripped with DVD Decrypter, re-encoded with dvd2svcd, mastered in dvd maestro, new ifo files made my ifoedit, getvts used in ifoedit.

Plays fine in ifoedit and powerdvd, burn both the AUDIO_TS AND VIDEO_TS and get the above results.

Someone please help me .. these TDK-R's are supposed to be the best discs you can buy I've wasted somewhere around $50 in media with 0 read 0 playable discs on my dvd drive.

Background information on my computer in case something is going on there:

    Windows XP (SP1)
    Abit KG-7 motherboard
    Athlon 1300mhz
    512mb DDR SDRAM
    80GB primary WD 800BB HD
    60gb IBM GXP75 secondary HD

    ideas ??

  2. Wow .. i just got off the phone with Sony tech support .. Wow .. what a clueless tech.

At first he thought it was a zip drive .. then he thought I had a sony pc .. then thought it was dvd reader .. then after i told him about all the differnt media i used he asked if the drive was +r or -r .. then asked me for the serial number .. "oh its an internal drive ?"

my god .. i knew right away i didnt have a prayer of getting any assistance .. the first thing he said was return it to the store for an exchange .. what a support staff !!

Same for me, nothing but problems with this drive and it is all-ready my second DRU-500, the first one was damaged badly after trying to write a DVD-RW !

None of my DVD-R discs is working (Optodisc, Prodisc and Bulkpaq branded), DVD-RW working at random (Optodisc branded, the same batch, some of the discs are writable and some are unusable)

Sony DVD+RW and Optodisc DVD+RW discs are working without any noticeable problems.

  7. wow i haven't had any problems. i only have used dvd-r and dvd+rw. both were the cheapest i could find on the web and they both play in my stand alone dvd player and it is almost 4 years old. you guys sure you know what you are doing when you are making dvds? cause that it what it seems like. operater error...,

  8. Always nice when someone replies with a "i'm not having a problem so you must be stupid" responce .. It is the drive not operator error

I've used every writing software out there, Nero .17, recordnow max 4.5, the recordnow that came with it and all of the above media, not one single usable disc. Burning the EXACT same content with the EXACT same software on a phillips dvd+r yields excellent results .. it is the drive

  9. well then i must be getting lucky because i have made like 20 to 25 dvds with the new sony burner and no problems. i use Nero 5.5.9.17 and DVD Decrypter and they both work fine with the drive.

No, you are not stupid at all, but just helpful to everyone who's bought or considering to buy this drive in the future.

Now there are so many Sony DRU-500A threads in all recordable DVD-related forums like this: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7325

  11. I have no trouble getting the written discs to read back in the dru500a .. the problem is nothing else will read them not a pc dvd drive, not 4 differnt brands of standalones. Yet my phillips writing on the same media reads fine in all 5 drives. I even tried the tdk dvd-r which is supposed to be maximum compatability .. nada

Pethaps a stupid question, but did you close the disc? (No Multisession)
Some drives have trouble reading unclosed multisession DVD's

What percent of the movies that you need to re-encode ?

Also, maybe the problem is which OS the driver is working under. Are you using w2k ?
