I have been using Smart ripper for a few years now but i am baffled as to why it would slow the ripping process down. I used to be able to rip at about 14 speed but now it is only 2 speed. I have installed the new aspi layer and this has made no difference to the speed. I am using a pioneer 16 speed DVD rom. Anyon eany idea on how to rectify this annoying problem.

You said you have been using it for years now. I assume you have been using the same drive also? Maybe your drive is wearing out.

Yes i have been using the same drive as well, but it is working fine i can still copy disc to disc at 12 speed no probs. The only major thing that i have done is to upgrade to XP PRO

I take it your talking about copyin Cd's and not DVD's.

the laser that reads the Cd is different than the laser that reads the DVD.

therefore your dvd laser can wear down while nof affecting your cd laser.

  5. hi,

i too have the same Drive pioneer 116 firmware 1.22. I usualy rip it some where between 5 - 10 nver gone more that 10 x. I thig it will be the laser that is Doing it. Have you enabled the DMA for the Drive after your upgraded to XP. try that.

I read somewhere the other day that it is Physicaly Imposible to rip faster than 2X because of the limtations of the hardware

I have a brand new Pioneer A04 and i can only rip @ 2X with smart ripper or DVD decryptor

Sorry to say you have been misinformed. i generally get ripping speed anywhere from 6x-9x. Maybe your thinking of burning speed? which is now a max of 4x on the latest drives(although there are no 4x discs yet)

i only used dell comps as an example..i'm sure toshiba has made dvd-roms for other comp makers..and also just plain dvd-roms ppl can buy separately
