Over 3 last days I tried to make svcd's using Dvd2svcd, great program, great quality but definitely NOT great encoding times when using 3pass vbr. (on 1 gHz AMD)
How does the quality compare with for example sefy's svcd templates in Tmpg 12i?
What settings for vbr are good to fit a 1,5 hour movie to
2 cd's in near dvd quality? Is a multipass much better than 1 pass vbr?
I'm quite new to svcd encoding and vbr because I was always used to create vcd's. Now I saw svcd and can't go back to vcd, I want to choose between Tmpg and dvd2svcd.

Two things first...
first: this is just my opinion
second: the best method is that best works for you not for others
My opinion:
I've used Tmpenc for 2 month's, i´ve tryied all possible values in tmpenc and allways come out
with 3cd's for a normal movie "90/100minuts" with the best possible quality deliver by tmpenc.
Let me tell you this, Save yourself from a lot of work/problems and use DVD2SVCD with CCE encoder
instead of tmpenc.
Since i´ve used DVD2SVCD i´m making one movie per day in 2 cds, and guess what? the quality is
better then tmpenc. When using average bitrates like 2000(3-pass) its-way better then tmpenc at 2520(CQ).
Oops now i have done it.... calm down you tmpenc lovers... this is just my opinion. Hey tmpenc is
a great product no doubt about it, but i prefer CCE for my encodings. I can´t go back to tmpenc.
Just use DVD2SVCD, make 5 or 6 clicks and there you go. Another movie to your collection. -
email me privately about cce... will give you link...
Oh... I have used both TMPEnc and DVD2SVCD... both work good.
My DVD2SVCD rip looks not better than my TMPEnc rips tho.. and it took DVD2SVCD 20 hours to do "Bounce".. at 4 pass vbr, average bitrate 1.7 (1700) and the movie is only 106 mins!!!
my TMPG rip on the other hand takes considerably less... 1 hour or so to rip the movie using smart ripper, 30-45 mins to do the DVD2AVI for Frameserving only, the 1-2 hours to use Vob2Audio to do the audio. The I do an SVCD with a CBR with TMPGEnc and that takes like 6-8 hours. Then I demux, then split with BBMPEG-30 minutes or so per split, then I use VCD imager to make the images-30 minutes each.. then burn-10 minutes each disk with my 12x burner...
and the sweet part of the whole thing is, with the exception of VCD imager running, I can use my computer thru this whole process and it really does not slow it down...
With DVD2SVCD, I basically have to have a "hands-off" approach to it.
Now I am gonna experiment with DVDx and compare the quality and time on that... I have plenty of expierence with my TMPGEnc method, and have done many movies, so I feel that I can be objective..
The future; I want to do chapters... will use that new tool when I get a chance (TSCV, or something like that)
