  1. After some advice on this forum, I am using TMPGenc to convert the MJPEG movie clips from my digital camera to VCD format (MPEG1?). I have tried this so far using an evaluation copy of the Morgan Multimedia MJPEG codec ($25), but I see there are many other MJPEG codecs available - PICVideo ($18 ), LEAD ($29), MainConcept (free), Nimo (does this includes MJPEG? I don't think it does) (free).

Which of these MJPEG codecs produces the best quality for the price?
Does the free MainConcept codec produce good results?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  2. I think alot of people here use the FREE MJPEG decompressor that comes with VirtualDub- Windows Movie Maker also has a built-in MJPEG decompressor.

That is what I used until I recently discovered the "VideoImpressions" video editor that came with my Fuji camera also has a built in MJPEG decompressor- Originally I ignored the software because it looked cheesy... until I was bored enough to try it today. Its worth a look if it came free with your FUJI camera....

  3. I had no idea there was more than one MJPEG codec.

Guess it's like how DV has different versions.

  4. This is probably a dumb question, but:

I got VideoImpressions V1.6 with my camera, which doesn't appear to have native functionality to convert to VCD format. (I think V1.7 has, though, form looking at the ARCsoft web site). Is it still possible for TMPGEnc to use the VideoImpressions MJPEG codec to produce the VCD format output that I need? If so, how?

Similarly, how do I get TMPGEnc to use the VirtualDub MJPEG codec?

    Thanks in advance!

As far as I know TMPGenc is an MPEG1/MPEG2 encoder. You cant make TMPG use MJPEG codec. If you have AVI files from VIDEOIMPRESSions, you can load them to TMPG for VCD encoding.

  6. Sorry, I should have been more specific-
I'll capture MJPEGs with my FUJI camera, and then use vdub/wmm/videoimpressions/etc to CONVERT to a LOSSLESS AVI (like huffy), then convert with TMPG.
TMPG cannot use the 'built-in' MJPEG codecs in these software.

If you buy a commercial MJPEG codec, you'll be saving yourself a step, but I'll pull my MPJEGs into videoimpressions so I can edit them.. add effects/music/text/etc. Actually, videoimpressions can also save as a Mpeg-1, but the quality is terrible.

If you don't need to edit, just pull into VirtualDub- Maybe run a temporal smoother, and brighten/sharpen, then save as some lossless avi.

Hey, I'm looking for an MJpeg codec (encode for video captures) that is free. Does one exist? I know picvideo can be had for $18 non-commercial but I would rather not pay if there's one out there that is free.

  8. Take a look at Showshifter - it's includes the PIC MJPEG codec.
I installed the Showshifter trial then a day later uninstalled it, and it even left the PIC MJPEG codec still installed.
    All for free.

That MJPEG Codec trick just worked for me.....
though, when I uninstalled, it deleted all my Divx codecs?!?!?

    No big deal..

Paulgab if you think tmpgenc is just for encoding to mpeg1/mpeg2 you have not really used the whole program to its fullest.
