Im a new Mac OSX 10.2 owner... Previously always used PCs...

I have an MPEG2 file (apparently) that I cannot get to play on the Mac whatever I try to do to it...

Out of interest what I am hoping to be able to do is take this MPEG2 file (which is produced by the Hauppauge DEC2000 UK DVB Digital Terrestrial TV Receiver which can record the Digital Stream as MPEG2 - so it says)
I have been able to play this file on a PC (albeit its 16:9 and displays squashed) but cant do a thing with it on the mac.

My end goal is to be able to take programs recorded by the DVB receiver as this MPEG2 stream and take them to the mac, edit them to remove the commercials (maybe iMovie2) and then archive my fav shows to DVD using iDVD.. I had thought this wouldnt be too hard! Hmph... what did I know...

Any advice would be most welcome to this newbie...

Out of interest the original source file as recorded from the Hauppauge DVB box is downloadable from my machine ( http://62.3.65.165/NEWS24.mpg 19.1MB) if anyone can tell me what I need to do to this file to be able to edit it in say iMovie then burn to DVD I would be over the moon...

  2. The Problem is that the Display Size is 540x576, and the real size is 720x576. This info is from MPEG Info 0.2 Quicktime has problems running this. It worked in vlc with no problems. You can get vlc from http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=14738&db=mac

I just played it back again and I noticed that the picture jumps from 16:9 to 4:3 then back to 16:9 again. This really screws with quicktime. I think!!!

  3. I wish we had wide screen PAL TV in the USA. Moved out to the USA 15 years ago from the UK. The NTSE is so crap. That sample you have for download makes me so pissed off.

Opps, Im sorry... Want the my goal... to be goaling...

I dont know if your aware but the first venture into Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting called 'Ondigital, later ITV Digital' collapsed into receivership. Now the BBC with Sky and Crown have launched a service using the DTT platform called 'FreeView' which is about 30 channels all for Free (if you exclude the Licence fee!) So at least in 2002 the vast majority can now have multi channel TV without having to subscribe to SKy TV...

  5. Are you using Quicktime to play the video? If so, QT won't play MPEG-2 files unless you fork over an extra $20 to apple to buy the MPEG-2 playback component for quicktime.

You can read about it here:
