If you really want a good all-format player, check out the Malata DVP-520. it is especially nice if you want a region-independent player that can convert PAL-NTSC well. It's been my primary deck for about 2 months now, replacing a well-used Tosh 3109.
The 520 is far from the cheapest deck out there, but it will play absolutely everything, and do it well.

i agree with musher up above about the "get what you pay for" thing. the reason is because my friend once had an apex and told me "dude, my playstation 2 can play dvd's better than my apex" (ended up returning it)

yes, but can it play VCD's!!!
that is why I got two units... a Expense DVD player and my cheapo Apex.
total DVD player (not counting DVD Rom & Sony DRU500a) 4...lol... I don't know why... oops... make it 7... got 2 PS2 and Xbox. lol...
