Well, this is just a bit off topic, but I need to know where The Win98 setup is detecting the WIndows ME installation. Was this the OS previously installed on the same disk you are trying to install Win98 on or is WinME installed on the disc of your new computer?
If WinME is located on one of the disks attached to your new computer, simply disconnect the drive with ME on it before attempting to install 98 on the other disk.
If ME was on the disc you are now trying to get Win98 on, then I need to know exactly what you did when you formated. Did you also use Fdisk to repartition the drive or did you just format the drive without repartitioning? If you did not repartition the disk, I would go ahead and use fdisk (located on any win98 or me startup floppy) to wipe out any partitions on the disk then, create a new partition (after resetting the computer of course)) before doing the final formatting.
If for some odd reason the Win98 setup program STILL thinks ME is on the drive, then I would go to the manufacturer of your drive's site and download whatever repair or setup utilities they have. One of these will usually let you simply write zeroes over the entire drive, completely erasing ANY data on the drive. That will get rid of any lingering remnants of ME for sure.
Hope this helps,
Prospero
