I'm burning an XVCD in Nero, ive made a few before but only a min or so to test some settings. now about 5minutes into the burn, i get the blue screen, then nero says "buffer underrun" and the burn stops. whyyyy

No need for a technical analysis to understand it. Buffer Underrun just happens when you've got too much going on.
So now, when you're burning, close all your programs (ctrl-alt-delete) and just let it burn. You can also cut your speed a bit, maybe halfway if it doesn't matter to you (if you burn at 8x, you could cut it to 4x) which will cut down on buffer underrun possibilities.
Or just get a newer burner w/ buffer underrun protection (which I don't know to much about - I don't own one of those).
