My setup:
Aver Tv98 PCI card, Athlon XP 1600+, 512Mb DDR2100 ram, 40gb 5400rpm Maxtor
I want to transfer my analog camcorder c-VHS tapes to CD in order to
play on my TV thru my standalone Pioneer Dv-333 player
I've done a couple; they look alright but you can definelty see the
better picture with the original tapes. I was capturing in 480x480
mode, using Huffy codec (YUY2) and no filters. The analog source looks very good so I didn't know if I needed filters or not. I chose 480x480 to
make SVCD's since it has twice the vert resolution of VCD mode so I
thought that should result in a better picture. I left it interlaced
since the source is interlaced and the destination is TV
Camcorder connected to capture card via composite cables (short
length).
I used Tmpg to encode with initially the default SVCD settings (30
min, CBR 2520, MSP set to motion est search). The 2nd one (45 min) I
used 2 pass VBR with the MSP setting to normal. The 1st one looked
slightly better than the 2nd one (1 disk output for both tries). Is 2
pass VBR mainly meant to be used to try and save the number of output
disks?
I'm looking for filter advice to apply in Vdub (or Tmpg) to make the
resultant picture on my TV look closer to how the tape plays. I'm
read that I should try MSP set to 'high quality (slow)' in Tmpg
settings. I'd rather apply filters in VDub to keep the encoding time down.
Any advice or links to info appreciated.
thanks

There's a noise reduction setting on Vdub. I wonder how it compares with the noise filter on tmpg.
That guide mentioned the 'high quality' checkbox on the noise filter menu.
I once turned that one. It caused my encoding time to jump to 15x real time. Tmpg noise reduction w/o that gave me a 6x time factor, which is why I wondering about filters in Vdub. -
The Noise reduction in Vdub is actually pretty good. I use it on Satallite captures to eliminate noise. A very light setting (Just a few marks) Gives an excellent picture.
