Anyone know a DVD player that plays VCDs and works well with most common cheap brands of CDR discs? I wanna get a VCD player to make playing the stuff put onto them easy, but I don't wanna spend a whole bunch of money to get top of the line CDRs.

Your best bet is the Hitachi 415U (~$180) it plays everything, DVD, VCD, SVCD, xVCD, xSVCD and MP3. Looking at the DVD guide here I notice that SVCD is crossouted but xSVCD isn't?!? I know this player will play SVCD so I'm not sure why that is.
I have a Apex AD600A but only to remove region lock/macrovision, I've got a friend with the 415 and it's pretty nice. -
I echo with Vejita. Hitachi 415U will play DVD/(x)VCD/(X)SVCD/CD/MP3 and Any type of CDR or CDRW without effort. This player beats all other brand name products in term of versatility, except the hacker's DVD player, for this player is not region and Macrovision free.

Apex AD-703 has served me well. 3 disc changer... plays every format... $179.99 and Region selection as well as Macrovision on/off option.

Pioneer 333 or the 503 Have played anything and everything thrown at them
No mp3's though, that's the negative.
