downloaded a film, and i normally use virtual dub to convert to wav if tmpeg doesnt recognise the sound on the film.
this time when i go to full sound processing mode, virtual dub says
"the requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format.
Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match that of
the requested format"
Any ideas how to convert the sound so i can make a VCD

It's using a compression format Vdub does not recognize. Try using Goldwave or some other audio app to convert to Wave.

Goldwave is shareware, check the tools section. Also download the Nimo codec pack, it has most audio codecs and is free.

That message usually comes up when AC3 is for sound. Use this guide to encode such DivX AVIs:
