Hi everyone,
My outdated PII 300 is having a hard time playing an mpeg2 movie(video runs a bit slowly which I don't mind but the audio stutters and makes speech unintelligible). So I decided to convert it to mpeg1 which my computer can play without any trouble.
To do this, I used Tmpenc(version beta 12e with meg2 function enabled) and took the video and audio source from the mpeg2 file. Then I set the video stream type as mpeg-1 and started the process. When it was done however, the outputted file was still an mpeg2 movie. I can't understand why it was'nt converted to mpeg-1 as that was the setting of the stream type. Am I correct in assuming that Tmpenc is capable of taking an mpeg2 movie and directly converting it to mpeg1? or is there another way of using Tmpenc to do this that I can use?(note: without using any other piece of software).
I'd rather be able to play mpeg2s on my computer but apart from adding additional hardware I can't see how I could get smooth audio and video playback so I'm resigned into downgrading to mpeg1s.
So can Tmpgenc convert mpeg2->mpeg1 and if so, then what am I doing wrong?

Yes it can. Start TmpGenc, cancel the wizard (the olde version you mentioned doesn't have it does it!!!!). Select your video and audio sources and then load the template you want to use. Adjust any settings appropriatley. Hit start and wait. Voila, an mpeg-1 video!!

Yes you are right, my version does'nt have a wizard.
I did not know about the templates and have been configuring all the settings manually up till now. Unfortunately, even when I do use the mpeg-1 templates i.e. the vcd ones, the movie still comes out as an mpeg-2.
It seems to me that for some obscure reason when converting from mpeg-2 to mpeg-1, Tmpgenc looks set to go ahead and do it but ends up leaving the file as an mpeg-2.
Thanks for checking in on my problem. -
You're probably best off trying the newest (or at least a newer) version. If you put them in separate directories, you can keep both simultaneously. I had no problems converting an mpeg2 video stream to vcd last I tried, but that was with a recent version.

Yup, this happened to me before.
I think the older version 12a does not has this problem.
It could be caused by different mpeg2 decoder under TMPGenc. -
I have used the de-mutilplex method as well but this was also unsuccessful.
The way I check if the movie is mpeg-2 is by loading the outputted file in the de-multiplex tool because this will cause the format of both the video and the audio to be displayed.
Bugster - I cannot remember if I loaded the template before or after source selection but your point certainly suggests that I may have done it after so I'm going to give it another go and will report back as soon as it's done.
If it fails again then I'm going to have to think about installing another version of Tmpgenc and so far in this thread I have been recommended using both a later and an earlier version so as you can guess I'm really hoping it does not come to that -

So you said that didnīt work. Hmm then try after (simple) De-Multiplex to (simple) Multiplex again and choose mpeg2 Super Video cd -
ah but I have no trouble encoding to mpeg-2(it is the playing that is the problem). Btw, I tried and failed to produce an mpeg-1 file when loading an mpeg-1 template after the source selection.
