how can i get information about a divx file ?

i have 2 question:

1. i downloaded 3 chapters of thundercats and they with a extention of avi.
i downloaded nimo code(the last version) and they dont play in any player.
i downloaded the file once again and still nothing happend.
media player say it dont have the write format.

how can i see what format the file have on it ?

2. i downloaded a file with extention of divx (blabla.divx)
what kind of format is it ? dp i need to convert it to something else ???
