  1. Microsoft has released a beta of the update to the Windows XP Movie Maker Program. Movie Maker 2 is supposed to be better than it's crippled predecessor and be better at Firewire captures.

  5. I like it - it still needs features but the titling actually has more features than Studio 7 (but not the flexability). The transitions/effects are also good - even a b/w "old movie" effect.

It imports MPEG1 files (it crashed on a WinTV PVR 250 file though)

Export is disappointing. WMV is the preferred export format in fixed templates. DV-AVI is the only other option which might be good for reencoding.

For a free package it is much better than its predecessor

Needs work: XP only, needs to export to any codec on the machine

  6. i tried the dload and it said error framedyn.dll not found. so i say ok then it says it was succesful? but i see no difference in my movie maker? what would look different all options seem the same! id love more effects and transitions!

  7. Try install again. It should look different and the version should be 2.0.3246.0

I imported a divx file (Star Trek episode) just fine - the autocut is annoying. But this may be a good freeware divx -> avi or wmv converter...

  8. @ rsuave: Try uninstalling the older version, that sumtimes fix the problem... but be sure that you have got a backup of that one, cuz a DLL that is missing is quite a problem...

  15. I think it rocks.

I edited some old clay videos I had made, and found it pretty easy.

I like how you can easily take a picture, edit the picture in Paint, and throw it back in the storyboard easier than other programs.

It still has some bugs, like if you have alot of footage on the storyboard with alot of effects, it takes forever to load

I like the black pencil effect.

All around I say its damn good. Great for people new to movie junk.

  16. Problems....

I just installed the Beta 2.0

It "looks" great, but whenever I click on an effect or transition, the program CLOSES.

Am I missing an important DLL somewhere, or is this just the sideeffect of an early beta release?

  17. I figured it out-

I checked some of the XP forums, and the BETA release has some conflicts with the DirectX/3D video acceleration.

So, if the Windows Movie Maker Beta 2 crashes for you when you try to use an effect/title/transition/etc, then you need to lower you video accelleration to the point where it deactivates DirectX/3D.

Works perfect now, and I am actually impressed.
The old version was nearly useless, but Beta2 could easily compete with Apple.

It still will NOT let you use 3rd party codecs, like Huffy, so you have to save as a UNCOMPRESSED AVI! But thats fine with me since I want to reencode with TMPG anyway.

I also do not like the sound quality. Voice tracks sound OK, but music sounds terrible. So I'll let WMM edit the voice tracks, and then I'll mux out the audio, and mix in the music separately, then mux back in with TMPG.

  18. I have found actual bugs in it - let MS know about your experiences & wish list - maybe they will listen and add features or fix the bugs.

Yes I want at least Indeo AVI output but hold my breath they would include MPEG1 even. They are trying HARD to get people onto the WMV bicycle.

  19. I just tried out this Movie Maker 2 and must say I'm very impressed. It has some limitations (which FREE program doesn't?), but overall, it is very nice.

I mainly use Vegas Video 3 for my editing, but have been looking for a program that's "user friendly" for my family and friends. For those who might doubt the program, see the demos here:

    Movie Maker 2 Demos

I did not have any problems w/ it crashing. Thumbs up MS!
