I've been reading about the coming Blue Laser technology that will greatly increase the capacity of DVD disk,by factors of 5-10!!
My stupid question is can Blue Laser be applied to the humble CDR to increase it's capacity? A 4GB CDR!!

No, blue laser is a new type of drive and disc. The word on the street is that the discs will be cartridge style like early car cd players. Due to its density scratches and fingerprints will have a greater affect, thats why the cartridge.

There would be little point for a "blue laser CD-R" if the disc capacity is the same as a standard recordable DVD...
Furthermore, it wouldn't really be a CD-R as no other CD drive will be able to read it...
BTW, high data density does not mean that scratches or fingerprints will necessarity have a greater effect. It depends on the robustness of the error detection and correction codes/methods of the disc as well (e.g., DVD is much more "data dense" than CDs but it is probably more resistant to data loss from wear and tear than your average CD).

If it's in a cartridge, how does that maintain backward compatibility with current DVD???

I've been hearing about blue-ray, FMD, holographic, and other new and exciting storage meduims for years now.
Wake me up once a produce is on the market. -
I agree that things like FMD will probably never materialize but blue laser technology really is around the corner. As far as I can tell the industry has really only taken serious interest in blue laser techology this year, as opposed to FMD which has been a pipe dream for at least two years now.
It should be noted that all the major players in the dvd industry have backed blue laser, which should not be confused with blue ray. They are both forms of blue laser technology but they are different. Anyway it has already been agreed upon that in a few years pretty much all new dvd players manufactured will support blue laser disks and that eventually the red laser dvds of today will be phased out. Sure they can still change their minds but as of right now, blue laser will be the next dvd standard.
Players are supposed to come out next year I believe and the burners will be out the year after. -
I agree with adam, unlike the other technology blue laser will become a reality. It's a natural progression from the current DVD technology and wouldn't require a major manufacturing change like some of the other technology would.
I really hope what firstrax says is true, that it'll use some sorta cartridge system. One of my biggest complaint with DVD's is they get scratched and dirty too easily. I'm not talking about the one's you own because everyone's careful with what are yours but the one's you rent. Even after you wipe off the layer of filth you're usually left with enough scracthes to cause some sorta playback glitch. I'm guessing if they do come out with a cartridge system it'll be similar to the CD caddies used by some CD-ROM's, like my trusty old Plextor UltraPlex sitting on my deskThe would solve the backwards compatibility with the current DVD media since all you would have to do is put the disc in an empty caddy and pop it in the machine.

What you need the is same minidisc-type caddy as used by DVD-RAM.
