  1. I am getting a new system and would like to put a ADVC-100 on it, but
i think i would need an aditional card or for use with this. If this is so, are is there a reccomendation on what kind of card to get ?
I just need analog to digital and back with a little editing and possibly dvd copying.

As far as a seperate PCI card, I read of people using cheap Chump Screw Us All brand cards, all the way up to expensive Canopus cards. The only common thing is that most people do not recommend TI chips on the cards. If you can, buy a machine with onboard firewire (iLINK), it just saves a slot, and some expense.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

Sorry about butting into erichb's post...but why don't you reccomend TI chips? My firewire card has a TI chipset, and it seems to capture and export fine...except when a DV device is connected(looks bad on comp, but fine on TV/Camera)

  4. Canopus used to have a warning on their web site about the type of 1394 card but some people have not experienced a problem. Here is there WEB site address http://www.canopus.com/US/products/index/products_homeuser.asp

They have three options now. The ADVC-100 ($299) external box. The ADVC-50 ($199) internal with a breakout box in a 5 1/4 bay (neat). The ADVC 1394 ($249) which integrate a 1394 card with the analog to digital converter (double neat) and the optional breakout box (5 1/4 bay) for front access. www.guygraphics.com has a review of the ADVC-50 on their web site.

Also here is the procedure to disable Macrovision on the ADVC-100:
Press and hold the Input Select button on the front panel until you see the color bars appear. Keep the button pressed (about 15 seconds) until the color bars disappear. Macrovision copy protection is now disabled until you switch off the ADVC-100.
I don't know about Macrovision for the other newer models

Just be aware that all 3 products are different and have different features and capabilities.

The ADVC 100 is DV & analog in & out through a firewire (IEEE 1394) connection, and requires a firewire PCI card (or equivalent if a Mac or laptop).

The ADVC 50 is DV in/out but analog IN ONLY, and fits in a bay or PCI slot, I'm not sure if it requires anything else, check the Canopus web site.

The ADVC 1394 is a PCI IEEE1394 firewire capture card, DV in/out, analog IN ONLY.

The Canopus web site is very good, worth a visit. There is a lot of misconception about these products, check to make sure you look at the one that has the features and capabilities you want.
