As far as the various formats, the descriptions of each type of format are listed in the "What Is" VCD and SVCD links at the top left corner of this website. Also another good page on this website for describing the CVD format is: http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/userguides/98177.php.

Plenty of info on XVCD's and a number of TMPGEnc templates can be found at www.kvcd.net.

For the most part a CVD is an SVCD at 352 X 480 resolution. Because of this you can take any SVCD guide and at some point (preferrably capture) in the process change the resolution from 480 X 480 to 352 X 480 and you will have made a CVD.

I use VirtualDub, TMPGEnc and VCDEasy to make VCD's. In depth guides to using these three programs can be found on this website.

The basic procedure I use for prerecorded tapes (everthing is left at defaults unless otherwise specified):

    1. Capture to AVI in VirtualDub using the HuffyUV codec
    A. Resolution 352 X 480
    B. Squish luminance range

    2. TMPCenc encode
    A. Select SKVCD 352 X 480 (NTSC) (from KVCD.net)
    B. Change Rate control mode to 2-pass VBR(VBR)
    1. Average bitrate 2000 to 2250
    2. Maximum bitrate 3500
    C. Change Motion search precision to Highest quality (very Slow)
    D. Verify Inverse telecine is not activated
    E. Encoding time 3:45 to 4:51 for 45 to 50 minutes of capture (on my dedicated "fast" system)
    F. When done encoding Simple Multiplex as MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR)

    3. VCD Easy burn (800mb/80min CD)
    A. SVCD 1.0
    B. Allow Overburn
    C. Turn off "Analyse MPEG files"
